THROWBACK THURSDAY--NOVA PARKS--THE WATER PLACE - POHICK BAY

Pohick is a Native American word that means “the water place”. Thanks to the efforts of former NOVA Parks chairman, Dr. Ira Gabrielson, 850 acres of land was acquired by purchase in the late 1960s, and by 1972 the park was ready to be opened. (Gabrielson is pictured above, left, as he looks over a map of Pohick.)
Pohick Bay Regional Park is a beautiful park on the water, but it is also so much more. The area is an outdoor paradise that now features over 1,000 acres of things to do, see, and enjoy. NOVA Parks continue to acquire more land in the area and will always be working to acquire even more--all in line with our efforts of preservation and recreational development in the Northern Virginia region. NOVA Parks works tirelessly to provide constant attention to Pohick Bay Regional Park year-round, making it one of the best outdoor destinations on the Potomac River.
Recreation areas inside the park include a boat launch that allows for exploration of the water from a variety of watercraft such as kayaks, paddleboards, and powered boats. For those who wish to do more than just watersports, Pohick Bay is an excellent place to enjoy a day of fishing. The water holds a bounty of largemouth bass, catfish, bluegill, crappie, carp, and perch. Even more activities for all ages include camping, hiking, nature walks, a full-size golf course, mini-golf, as well as the very popular Pirate’s Cove Waterpark.
