Mountain Biking

Mountain bikes are permitted on the Bull Run Occoquan Trail from Fountainhead to Bull Run Marina ONLY. Cyclists should yield to BOTH hikers and equestrian users. All trails are natural surface, single track or double track featuring: rocks, roots, logs, loose sand, ledges, steep climbs/descents and narrow bridges.

The Occoquan Water Trail League (OWL) is a volunteer affiliate of the Occoquan Water Trail and NOVA Parks composed of recreational paddlers and others committed to low-impact use, conservation and resource stewardship of our shared waterways.

Along this track one will also find one of the region’s richest untapped historic resources.

Hiking Trails

Piscataway Crossing Regional Park features a short trail along the river on the lower portion of the park property. The trail offers brilliant views of the Potomac River, as well as the local foliage and wildlife. Please note that some areas of the property may not be accessible to the public because of livestock grazing, safety issues, or environmental sensitivity. Please adhere to the marked trail route.

Hiking Trails

Hike through an unblemished 20 acres in the heart of downtown Clifton, VA on the trails at Webb Sanctuary. This small yet beautiful park offers wonderful views of local foliage and wildlife, as well as a water crossing. Interpretive signs along our trails offer information about local natural history.

Playgrounds

The W&OD features playgrounds suitable for kids of all ages. Located at various place along the route, playgrounds feature multiple slides and levels, multiple levels, stair cases and a swing set, over a sandy area. The play areas are open year round weather permitting.

Location: Locations include playgrounds immediately off the trail in Purcellville and two small playgrounds next to each other west of Lee Highway on the Arlington/Falls Church line.  There are several other playgrounds West End Park in Falls Church and Trailside Park in Herndon for example adjacent to the trail and open to the public.

Equestrian Trails

Directly adjacent to the paved portion of the W&OD is a 32 mile gravel trail idea for horseback riding. While the equestrian trail indeed runs parallel to the paved trail, it does occasionally cross minor streams and waterways, and disappears into the brush from time to time.

Cyclists regularly enjoy the W&OD both as a means of recreation as well as a commuter route. Many of the hundreds of daily trail users take the W&OD from home to work and vice versa. Still, there are plenty of users who find the trail ideal for recreational use and exercise.
